Smiling dental patient sitting in exam chairWhen most people think about a healthy, beautiful smile, they tend to focus their attention on the teeth. However, the gums play a crucial role in your oral health and the appearance of your smile. The gums provide a protective seal around the teeth, keeping bacteria away from the tooth roots and the supporting structures. They help support the teeth and keep them in proper alignment. The gums also help to provide you with a beautiful, confident smile. When your gums recede, your oral health, and your appearance are affected. Solutions Dental Implants can restore recessed gum tissue with soft tissue regeneration.

What Causes Gum Recession?

Gum recession has several causes. These causes include
•  Gum disease. This is the most common cause. As swollen tissue pulls away from the teeth, it begins to die, causing the gum line to recede.
•  Aggressive brushing.
•  Alignment issues with your teeth.
•  Bruxism.
•  Using tobacco products.
•  Genetics.

Soft tissue grafting is one of the most well-known treatments for regenerating soft tissue. This procedure involves surgery, during which tissue is taken from the roof of your mouth and sutured over the affected teeth. There are a few different types of soft tissue grafts, including connective tissue and free gingival. The type of graft you receive will depend upon your specific needs. Your gums and the donor tissue, then fuse together, reforming a healthy, beautiful gum line.

Pinhole Gum Surgery

Pinhole gum surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that provides you with an alternative to the traditional soft tissue graft. During this procedure, a small hole is created in the gums, and specialized tools are used to loosen and rearrange your gums through that access hole. Once the gums have been placed appropriately, small strips of collagen are then placed under the gums through the access hole. These strips work to stabilize your gums and also to help regenerate new tissue.

L-PRF

L-PRF, or leukocyte platelet rich fibrin, can also be used to help regenerate new tissue. With this treatment, a small sample of your blood is drawn and spun through a centrifuge. As the blood spins, it separates. A fibrin matrix forms in the center of the sample and collects the platelets, which contain growth factors responsible for tissue healing and growth. The fibrin clots are removed from the sample and pressed to remove excess water, leaving thin membranes. These membranes can be used following a soft tissue graft to encourage faster healing or can simply be placed over the areas of recession to aid in the regeneration of new soft tissue.

Taking Steps to Prevent Gum Recession

Even after having gum recession treated, it is still possible for it to occur again if you do not take the proper precautions. It is important that you brush and floss every day. When you brush, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle strokes. Have alignment issues and bruxism treated. It can also be helpful to quit smoking, or using other types of tobacco products. By taking care of your mouth and gums, you can ensure the health of your gums and prevent new gum recession from occurring.
