Antibiotics and the effectiveness of early implant loss
Posted on 10/5/2020 by Greg Kammeyer
According to Gary Greenstein, DDS, MS; and Dennis Tarnow, DDS the decision to prescribe an adjunctive antibiotic at implant placement in a healthy patient not receiving bone grafts is a controversial issue. The authors analyzed 7 current systematic reviews on this concern from a statistical and clinical perspective. Based on the findings, a statistically significant difference was noted in implant loss. The calculations from the NNTs appear to show that antibiotics help reduce early implant loss and 2mg of amoxicillin prior to implant placement in healthy patients provide a clinically significant benefit. Personally I've noted a very low failure rate over 36 years using antibiotics for socket bone regeneration as well as implant placement.
